Why Do Asphalt Shingles Develop Blisters?

Asphalt shingles are the most popular residential roofing option in the U.S. They are cost-effective, durable and available in a wide variety of styles and colors. With proper installation and regular maintenance, you can prolong the life of this material.

Among the most common problems that can develop in asphalt shingles is blistering. Learn common reasons it occurs from a local roofing company

Why Does Shingle Blistering Occur?

Shingles usually blister due to poor roof ventilation. If this part of your home is not sufficiently ventilated, warm, humid air from your living spaces will have no way to escape. It can cause your roof to get too hot, which can then speed up shingle deterioration. Over time, the heat will cause shingles to develop blisters.

Another thing that can cause blisters on asphalt shingles is trapped moisture. Shingles with trapped moisture are more likely to get blisters. As the sun heats their surface, the moisture beneath them also increases in temperature, causing blisters to form.

What Can You Do About This Issue?

Blisters won’t necessarily affect the lifespan and durability of your roof. However, if you notice them on your asphalt shingles, it’s still best to contact a reliable roofer to give them a check. It’s because time will eventually come that they will pop. When this happens, the protective granules embedded in your shingles will fall off. Significant granule loss will cause the shingles to weaken, and leaks will eventually occur.

Foot traffic can cause blisters to pop. To avoid them from popping, it’s best to allow only experienced professionals to complete roofing jobs. Another thing you can do to keep blisters from popping is to keep your roof clean. Debris from the surrounding roof can land on your roof and pop blisters.
