Roof stains are a common issue that homeowners encounter sooner or later. However, don’t be alarmed since not every roof stain is a cause for concern. Some stains can be a warning that your roof has underlying damage, while others are just a blemish on your roof that can be remedied easily. However, you should be able to identify the kind of roof stain you’re observing so you can contact your roofer to assist you with the repairs.
In this post, WaynCo Roofing shares the different kinds of roof stains, what they mean, and how you can prevent them from popping up.
Algae
Roof shingles that exhibit a blue-green or dark black stain are affected by algae strains called gloeocapsa magma. While this particular algae isn’t harmful to your roof, it creates blemishes that can tarnish its appearance. It’s carried through wind and dust if you have neighbors that are affected by the same issue as well. To treat this stain, we recommend using oxygen bleach or a trisodium phosphate solution with a low-pressure wash.
Rust Stains
Rust stains normally appear in areas surrounded by metals, such as your chimney. We recommend cleaning them with oxalic acid as they are an effective tool to remove and prevent rust. You can take a sigh of relief afterwards since you don’t have to worry about rust affecting other components of your home that warrants a roof replacement project.
Water Stains
Water stains can be a telltale sign of an impending roof leak. Be sure to check if your shingles are intact, or head down to see if your attic or ceilings are showing any signs of leaking. If there are, contact your local roofer immediately for assistance.
