A Guide to Roofing Ventilation

Roofs, as one of the most integral parts of one’s home, must be backed by proper ventilation to perform effectively. With it, homeowners are able to guarantee that their roofs and property are protected from the circumstances of being exposed to warm to extreme temperatures. Let roof replacement company WaynCo Roofing, LLC share more of how it works.

How Does Roof Ventilation Work?

The roof or attic ventilation is designed to allow air to circulate through the attic. There are strategically installed intake vents and exhaust vents that serve the ventilation system to encourage continual airflow. These vents help reduce heat and moisture in the attic, as well as in the roofing system. The two kinds of ventilation systems are:

  • Passive Ventilation. These are exhaust vents on the roof ridges which release warm and humid air. These let go of the pressure in the attic that pulls fresh air through the intake vents at the roof soffits, along the roof edges.
  • Mechanical Ventilation. Should you have a roof insurance claim, ensure you get to add this system if your attic is too large that passive ventilation won’t cut it. This unit uses mechanical fans– which can be solar-powered, to release air from your attic.

The Benefits of Roof Ventilation

  • Prevents mold growth. Mold spores thrive in damp or moist environments. Hence, ensuring to keep your attic dry and cool prevents them from growing, and effectively keeps your roof in good shape for the years to come.
  • Reduces HVAC bills. With proper ventilation, you’ll have to rely less on your cooling unit since the air is much cooler. Keep in mind that the heat trapped in your attic can radiate back to your living space, which can make your home feel uncomfortable, requiring you to use your cooling system.
